Ooga-ooga-ooga-chaka

Yeah, I'm hooked on a feelin'. But that feelin' was snatched away for a moment today when I was nearly killed. OK, maybe I'm overreacting. I've been doing that a lot lately.

This morning, however, I felt the fear of death. Sinceriously.

I was visible like this, but didn't have the advantage of traffic cones today.
I took off for an extended trot this morning because I figured I needed it. I knew I could do the bridge route that’d get me 4.64 miles, which is respectable, but I needed more. I’ve recently added to that route to make it a whopping 7 miles, just like the Bix. Just what the doctor ordered. The longer the run, the deeper the zone.

The trouble with the long route is that a stretch of it follows Knox County Highway 10 east from Seminary Street to Farnham Street. The shoulder along there is narrow – maybe 18 inches – and then it’s chunky gravel and a ditch. Not prime running ground. So I stick to the paved patch of shoulder until I see an oncoming car or truck and then step off into the gravel to allow a little more space.

Now, the idea behind running against the flow of traffic is that you can see what’s coming. Well, on a two-lane, you can still have traffic sliding up behind in passing situations. And that’s just what happened today. Some a-hole decided to pass a semi that was moving too slow for his taste. So this jerk went flying by, not two feet from me! I hope he made it to work on time.

Maybe it’s time to find another long route with a better margin of safety.
